This might be the only marble statue depicting eyelashes. The Sleeping Ariadne is a colossal statue made about 100 AD, during the empire of Hadrian in Rome. It represents Ariadne, the daughter of the King Minos of Crete, sleeping in the Island of Naxos, abandoned by her lover Theseus. As the emperor Hadrian was phil-hellenistic, he ordered his sculptors to make copies of many Greek masterpieces. This one is a copy of another Ariadne made in the 2nd century BC, probably by Epigonus, a sculptor of the Pergamene School in Greece. Found in Rome in 1503, the statue was acquired by the Pope Julius II in 1512 from the Maffei family in Rome, and actually is exhibited in the Gallery of Statues of the Musei Vaticani (Vatican Museums).
